Tattoo aftercare instructions

Protective film

You should have second skin or cling film covering your tattoo upon leaving the studio. Be careful not to remove it unintentionally.

Second skin – this is the adhesive film placed on your tattoo. It should be removed within 24 to 48 hours. Please be aware of excessive redness around the tattoo while it’s on. You could be having a reaction to the heat or the film itself. If this happens please remove it before the recommended period.

Cling film – this would be the conventional cling film secured with tape over your tattoo. This should be removed on the day you are getting tattooed

It’s natural that plasma, ink and blood accumulate between the tattoo and the film. If this is excessive, it’s time to replace the film and give the tattoo a good clean

Cleaning and applying creams

After removing the film after the advised timings, make sure you wash the tattoo with plenty of running warm water. You can use normal soap but antiseptic is preferable. Avoid scented soaps and aim for the most natural product you can find.

Air dry the tattoo or use kitchen roll to tap dry. DO NOT use toilet paper as it may leave residue or dust on that tattoo.

Apply a tattoo aftercare cream. Please avoid scented creams or anything that is not suitable for wounds. Remember, the tattoo has exposed the top layer of the skin and should be cared for in the same way you’d care for a wound. Use the same level of hygiene and care.

Cocoa butter is the most natural cream you can apply. Vaseline can be an alternative.

The purpose of the cream is to offer a barrier between the tattoo and the environment. Your body will naturally heal. The cream will help the process and avoid excess forming of scabs and skin cracking.

How long to put cream on for?

This varies from person to person but most tattoos will need between a week to two to heal.  During this period it’s important you wash it regularly and apply cream if it’s too dry. After a week you should start losing the dry skin over the tattoo. The cream will help it not crack and please remember not to pull any scabs as you may damage he tattoo.

Avoid direct sun
If you are going to place clothes over your tattoo in the first few days it’s advisable that you place cling film loosely between the tattoo and your clothes. This will avoid irritation and forming of extra scabs.

If you are unsure of anything regarding the aftercare please get in touch for advise.
